Full Course Description

Writing effective treatment goals for children with motor speech disorders requires more than identifying speech sound errors. This course explores how to translate a child’s clinical motor speech profile into individualized, measurable, and functionally meaningful goals.

Participants will examine the distinct and overlapping characteristics of childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), pediatric dysarthria, and motor speech delay, with emphasis on motor planning, programming, and execution. Through clinical examples and goal-writing activities, participants will learn to prioritize treatment targets based on movement patterns, speech subsystems, severity, stimulability, and functional communication needs.

The course will emphasize moving beyond phoneme accuracy to develop goals that reflect the underlying speech motor challenges and support meaningful progress.

Learning Outcomes

  •  Differentiate key clinical characteristics of childhood apraxia of speech, dysarthria, and motor speech delay as they relate to treatment goal development.
  • Identify relevant assessment findings involving motor planning, programming, execution, and speech subsystem function to prioritize individualized treatment targets.
  • Construct measurable, functionally relevant motor speech goals that address movement patterns, motor control, and speech production across different clinical profiles.
